From 19 September to 4 October 2026, Munich hosts the world’s largest folk festival on the Theresienwiese. Around 40 beer tents, a vibrant atmosphere, freshly poured beer and a wide selection of Bavarian specialties – both sweet and savoury – welcome visitors from around the globe.

By underground (U-Bahn):
The nearest underground stations are Karlsplatz (Stachus) and Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof). From Marienplatz, take underground lines U3 or U6 directly to Goetheplatz or Poccistraße. Both stations are located just steps from the main entrance to the festival grounds.
By suburban train (S-Bahn):
All S-Bahn lines stop at Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Hackerbrücke. From either station, a well-signposted walk of approximately 10–15 minutes leads directly to the Oktoberfest grounds.
By taxi or on foot:
A taxi will take you to the official entrances at Theresienwiese in around 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic. Alternatively, guests may choose to walk; the journey takes approximately 30 minutes and offers a pleasant route through Munich’s city centre, passing many of the city’s main sights along the way.

Each year in late summer, Munich comes alive with music, lights and a festive spirit as Oktoberfest opens on the Theresienwiese. The world-famous festival brings together Bavarian joie de vivre, centuries-old traditions and a strong sense of community. Visitors from around the globe gather in the beer tents to celebrate, enjoy regional specialities and experience the unmistakable atmosphere of the “Wiesn”.
Traditionally, the festival begins with the parade of the Wiesn landlords: led by the Münchner Kindl and the Lord Mayor, decorated carriages and brass bands make their way across the grounds. The official start takes place with the tapping of the first keg in the Schottenhamel festival tent – “O’zapft is!” and 12 gun salutes signal the start of beer serving. Around the beer tents, with Bavarian specialities and music, rides, showmen and market stalls provide plenty of entertainment.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit to the Wiesn, we have compiled a selection of practical tips – from what to wear to the best times to attend.
Dress code and traditional attire
Traditional dress is an integral part of the Oktoberfest experience. Dirndls and lederhosen are widely worn, including by international visitors. When wearing a dirndl, the position of the bow carries meaning: tied on the right indicates that the wearer is in a relationship, on the left signifies single, in the centre suggests undecided or a young woman, and tied at the back traditionally denotes widows or serving staff.
Table reservations and seating
To guarantee seating in one of the larger beer tents, reserving a table well in advance – ideally several months ahead – is strongly recommended. Reservations are generally available only for full tables seating eight to ten guests. Without a reservation, weekday mornings or afternoons offer the best chance of finding a seat spontaneously, while evenings and weekends are considerably busier.
Best time to visit
Weekdays from late morning to mid-afternoon are typically quieter and more suitable for families. The most vibrant – and busiest – periods are Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as public holidays. For a relaxed experience, plan to spend at least three to four hours at the festival and allow time to stroll around the grounds.
Security and bags
For security reasons, large bags and backpacks are not permitted on the festival grounds. Small handbags with a maximum volume of three litres are allowed. Detailed information on entry and security regulations is clearly displayed at all entrances.
Payment and tipping
Many tents accept cashless payment by card or smartphone. Nevertheless, carrying some cash is advisable, particularly for smaller stalls. Tipping is customary and usually amounts to around ten per cent or rounding up the bill.
Family-friendly areas and children
Oktoberfest hosts special family days on Tuesdays, offering reduced prices on rides and attractions. The Familienplatzl, located in the southern part of the Theresienwiese, is especially suitable for families, with carousels, games and child-friendly dining options. Please note that strollers are permitted on the grounds only until 6.00 p.m.
Safety and orientation
Enjoy beer responsibly; most tents also serve non-alcoholic beverages and Bavarian specialities. Groups are advised to agree on a meeting point in advance, as it is easy to become separated in the crowds. An official Oktoberfest app or a map of the grounds can be helpful for navigating between tents, attractions and exits.
Sicherheit und Mitnahme von Taschen
Aus Sicherheitsgründen dürfen keine großen Taschen oder Rucksäcke mit auf das Gelände genommen werden. Kleine Handtaschen mit einem Volumen bis maximal drei Litern sind erlaubt. Eine Übersicht der Einlass- und Sicherheitsregeln finden Sie an allen Eingängen.
Bezahlung und Trinkgeld
In vielen Zelten ist bargeldlose Zahlung per Karte oder Smartphone möglich. Dennoch empfiehlt es sich, etwas Bargeld dabeizuhaben, besonders an kleineren Ständen. Ein Trinkgeld von circa zehn Prozent oder ein kleiner Aufrundungsbetrag ist üblich.
Familienfreundliche Bereiche und Kinder
Das Oktoberfest bietet spezielle Familientage (dienstags) mit ermäßigten Preisen. Der Familienplatzl-Bereich im Südteil der Theresienwiese ist besonders kinderfreundlich gestaltet, mit Karussells, Spielständen und passender Gastronomie. Kinderwagen dürfen nur bis 18:00 Uhr mitgebracht werden.
Verhalten und Orientierung
Trinken Sie maßvoll, viele Zelte bieten auch alkoholfreie Getränke und bayerische Spezialitäten. Vereinbaren Sie vorab Treffpunkte für Gruppen, da es im Gedränge leicht passieren kann, dass man sich verliert. Eine Wiesn-App oder ein Geländeplan hilft bei der Orientierung zwischen Zelten, Fahrgeschäften und Ausgängen.

Families often prefer the quieter, more relaxed beer tents at Oktoberfest. Popular choices include the Tradition Tent, Schottenhamel Tent, Armbrustschützenzelt and Fischer-Vroni Tent. These tents tend to offer a calmer atmosphere, particularly around lunchtime, and often provide children’s meals.
For families, we especially recommend our family maisonette in the main building. Spanning 91 m² across two levels, it accommodates up to four adults and two children. The maisonette features a fully equipped kitchenette, a spacious living area, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an additional sofa bed in the attic. Baby cots, high chairs and children’s tableware are provided complimentary, making it ideal for a comfortable family stay during Oktoberfest.
